Care of Your Jewellery

Freshwater PearlsIt is important you look after your jewellery to ensure it looks great and lasts. All metals and stones require different care:

All jewellery however should be:

  • Stored Safely
  • Protected from Chemicals and Cosmetics
  • Handled and worn with care.

Plated Jewellery

Care for silver plated jewellery as you would your silver jewellery. Protect it from Perfumes, Hairsprays and other cosmetics as these can erode the plating. Store it in a box out of direct sunlight wrapped in acid free tissue paper to protect from tarnish and handle and wear with care.

Remove tarnish from plated items with a polishing cloth but reduce the amount of polish used as over exposure can remove the silver or gold plating.

Unlike sterling silver or gold, plated jewellery will eventually wear quicker and easier. Proper cleaning, maintenance, and storage are critical for extending its life usage.

Precious Metals

Precious metals will wear over time as gold and silver are particularly soft and therefore prone to scratches and wear. How quickly it will wear all depends on how often you wear your jewellery, how you wear it and exposure to other metals. Remove tarnish with a polishing cloth. A good professional polish will shine any metal up again.

Swarovski Crystals and Pearls

Store crystals and pearl jewellery in a soft pouch or gift box and keep it separate from other jewellery to avoid scratches. An occasional buffing with a soft cloth will help maintain its lustrous finish. Keep dry and protect from cosmetics such as hairspray and perfume. If you must clean you jewellery wash Swarovski crystal by hand in lukewarm water to which a few drops of a mild dish detergent. Rinse under water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid spotting and lint spoiling the shine. Never use any abrasive or corrosive detergents. Crystals are prone to fingerprints so it is advisable to wear cotton gloves to avoid this.

Freshwater Pearls, Opals and other stones

Natural stones are often soft. It is important you handle and wear with care. If immersed in water they are likely to soak up the moisture as they are porous and this will ruin the look and texture of the stone if exposed over periods of time. Never put them in a jewellery ionic cleaner or chemicals instead wipe them with a dry/damp cloth. You should take emeralds, opals, pearls, amber, turquoise and moonstone to a professional jewellery to be cleaned, Diamonds and other stones can be cleaned carefully with a baby toothbrush and washing up liquid, rinsed then dried carefully with a soft lint free cloth.
